Biological Safety Program Information
The Mission of the Biosafety Program is to promote safe biosafety practices for all staff, students and researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi. One of the key goals of the program is minimizing the risk of potential occupational exposure to biological materials in research and teaching environments and to prevent the release of such materials into the environment. This mission is accomplished through continuous interaction and support of the research community, and by a training program on the principles of biosafety and biosafety lab inspections (separate inspection from the Institutional Biosafety Committee). By increasing awareness of basic principles and potential dangers associated with working with biological materials, the program creates a foundation for researchers to conduct their activities in a safe environment.
The program consists of a Biosafety Training Program and a Biological Commodities Procurement Program.
The IBC is a separate component of the University of Hawaiʻi Research Support Services and is responsible for overseeing all research activities involving infectious agents and recombinant materials in a research and/or teaching environment at the university of Hawaiʻi.

All activities involving select agents must be registered with the University of Hawaii Biosafety Compliance Program. Contact the Research Compliance Officer.
