Lecture to focus on requiring developers to pay for public infrastructure

Professor Gerald Korngold, director of the Center for Real Estate Studies at New York Law School and an international lecturer on land and property law issues, will give the 2018 Distinguished Gifford Lecture in Real Property on Thursday, November 1, at the UH law school.

Titled “Land Value Capture: Should Owners and Developers Have to Contribute Extra Payments for New Public Infrastructure?,” the lecture will be given from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Davis Levin Livingston Moot Court Room at the William S. Richardson School of Law, followed by a reception from 5:30-6 p.m.

Korngold has published extensively on real estate and land use law. His articles discuss the subprime and mortgage crisis, homeowners associations, international property issues, shopping center development and conservation easements. He has lectured widely, and writes and teaches in the fields of property and real estate law. Among his recent publications is an updated version of his book, Private Land Use Arrangements: Easements, Real Covenants, and Equitable Servitudes.

Before joining New York Law School in 2008, Korngold was dean of Case Western Reserve University School of Law for nine years. He serves as a Distinguished Scholar at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Distinguished Gifford Lecture series is sponsored by the Carlsmith Ball law firm. It was established in 2002 by the Gifford Foundation to honor UH Professor David L. Callies, who serves as Benjamin Kudo Professor of Law, as well as prominent Hawai‘i attorney Jerry M. Hiatt, for their outstanding work in the field of property law.
