Professional and educational opportunities continue to expand for the State of Hawaiʻi as Lockheed Martin and the University of Hawaiʻi‘s College of Engineering renew a collaborative agreement through the Industry Affiliates Program, strengthening bonds between the University and the Oʻahu-based high-tech company.
The partnership agreement calls for the University of Hawaiʻi‘s College of Engineering to receive a broad range of support from Lockheed Martin ORINCON Defense, including providing guest lecturers for classes, clubs, meetings, and seminars; reviewing of student presentations and projects, and providing other interactive programs.
Ty Aldinger, Director of Lockheed Martin ORINCON Hawaiʻi Operations, said, "Technology is critical in every aspect of modern life and its role continues to grow. As part of Hawaiʻi‘s ohana we believe everyone should have every opportunity to succeed. This partnership has strengthened our commitment to provide additional opportunities for Hawaii‘s engineering students."
Lockheed Martin ORINCON Defense established a Hawaiʻi Operations on the island of Oʻahu in 1987, providing high-tech jobs to island residents. Fully 50% of the engineers employed by Lockheed Martin ORINCON are graduates of the University of Hawaiʻi. They have offices on Oʻahu, Maui, and, soon, on Kauaʻi, providing innovative software solutions to a wide range of federal and state agencies.
Dr. Wai-Fah Chen, UH College of Engineering Dean, said, "Industry Affiliates such as Lockheed Martin are invaluable to our students and faculty who work closely with industry leaders, learning new technologies, applications, and methods that enhance the curriculum of the College of Engineering. In turn, we graduate highly skilled engineers whose contributions to Hawaiʻi‘s business community are immediate and significant."
Last year the Lockheed Martin contribution allowed the College of Engineering to establish a Multidisciplinary Engineering Cooperative Program for the College of Engineering, system administration security and maintenance, and web development and programming of the College of Engineering website. In addition, Lockheed Martin and other Industry Affiliates collaborate to refine the College‘s engineering program syllabi.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 130,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2003 sales of $31.8 billion.
