The University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa will host 170 high school yearbook and newspaper editors this Friday and Saturday, August 10-11, for a two-day journalism workshop. The workshop is held annually at the beginning of the school year to prepare students for their positions and to help them learn more about journalism.

The students and 30 advisors will be at UH Manoa‘s Campus Center to hear 23 speakers talk about interviewing, feature writing, journalism law and ethics, layout and design, photography, headlines and captions.

During the workshop, many of the students will also be taking one-hour classes in PageMaker and Photoshop. The event culminates Saturday afternoon with a Layout and Copy Contest, when the students use what they have learned throughout the workshop to create designs and stories that will be judged.

Speakers include media attorney Jeff Portnoy, Andy Yamaguchi from The Honolulu Advertiser, and Burl Burlingame from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. The featured speaker will be Terry Nelson, who has advised newspaper and yearbook publications for 25 years and was named to USA Today‘s All USA Teacher, First Team, and the National Journalism Hall of Fame.

Middle school students will be attending from Waimea Canyon and Kapaʻa on Kauaʻi, and Moanalua and Wahiawa middle schools on Oʻahu. High school attendees will be coming from Hilo, Moanalua, Konawaena, Kohala, Waiʻanae, Iolani, Farrington, Sacred Hearts, St. Louis. St. Francis, Kapolei, Kaimuki, Waialua, Lahainaluna, and Kapaa.

About 60 of the students and their advisors will be staying overnight at a university dormitory.

This second annual workshop is sponsored by the University‘s Department of Co-Curricular Activities, Programs and Services; Herff Jones Yearbooks; and the Hawaii Schools Publications Association.
