Gary K. Ostrander Appointed UH Manoa Vice Chancellor for Research

The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents today approved the appointment of Gary K. Ostrander to be Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Ostrander is currently Associate Provost for Research and Chair of the Graduate Board at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.

At Johns Hopkins, Ostrander heads a lab currently researching aspects of coral biology related to the development of cancer. He has also focused his research on the worldwide deterioration of coral reef ecosystems.

"We are pleased to have a scholar of Dr. Ostrander‘s caliber join our senior leadership team at Mānoa," said Chancellor Peter Englert. "He brings with him an extensive background in science of vital interest and importance to Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region along with a solid administrative record that will give new direction to our graduate education and research enterprise."

The new vice chancellor received his bachelor‘s degree in biology from Seattle University, a master‘s degree in biology from Illinois State University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington, where he specialized in aquatic toxicology. He previously held positions at Oklahoma State University and has been at Johns Hopkins University since 1996.

Ostrander is expected to start in his new position at UH Mānoa in early December.
