University of Hawaii to Host Wester Region Teaching Symposium

The University of Hawaiʻi‘s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources is sponsoring the Western Region Teaching Symposium, September 28-29, 2001, at the UH Manoa Campus and the Ala Moana Hotel.

The two-day symposium will showcase University of Hawaiʻi achievements as well as feature other states in the Western Region. Educators from nine states in the Western Region and Pacific Land Grant Institutions will speak, including keynote speakers Tom Angelo of the School for New Learning of DePaul University and James Knight of the University of Arizona.

The symposium will focus on teaching "TIPS" applicable to both formal and non-formal situations. These TIPS will be provided through workshops, posters and presentations that will inform attendees about and involve them in the following areas:

Teachers: Meeting Professional Challenges
Institutions: Changing with the Times
Programs: Reflecting Today‘s and Tomorrow‘s Needs
Students: Understanding Diverse Profiles

The first day of the symposium will also include a "Made in Hawaiʻi" Festival at the UH Campus Center featuring products of Hawaiʻi, followed by a reception and Hawaiian buffet dinner and program at the Ala Moana Hotel.

The second day will feature a keynote address and concurrent sessions, ending with lunch. Visitors and their families will then be treated to an afternoon tour of Windward Oʻahu for an in-depth look at traditional Hawaiian and modern management of agricultural lands.
