The Dai Ho Chun Endowment for Distinguished Lecturers of the Colleges of Arts & Sciences presents "Capitalism in Decline: Causes and Implications," a free public lecture and book signing by Gopal Balakrishnan, at 4:30 p.m., Monday, December 5, 2016, at the Shidler College of Business, Room A101.

Balakrishnan will speak about how the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis has put a question mark around the account of capitalist globalization as destined to expand irresistibly into the foreseeable future.  He will defend Marx’s explanation of why the capitalist system not only generates such cyclical crises, but also how it reaches the outer limit of development.  He will also consider the political scenarios that arise amidst this convoluted “end of capitalism."

Balakrishnan is a professor in the Department of History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz, teaching seminars in classical political thought, philosophy from Plato to Hegel, Marxism and critical theory.  He is a longtime member of the editorial board of the New Left Review and has been a regular contributor of this journal. He is the author of The Enemy (2000), a comprehensive, critical reconstruction and contextualization of the entire oeuvre of Carl Schmitt, Debating Empire (2003), Antagonistics: Capitalism and Power in an Age of War (2008) and is close to completing a two-volume reconstruction of Marx's thought titled The Architectonic of Capital.

Professor Balakrishnan will sign books following his lecture. The UH Bookstore will have books available for purchase.

In addition, Balakrishnan will holding a seminar for interested UHM students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Burns 2118 on “Karl Marx the Abolitionist.”   Email Jaimey Hamilton Faris  hamilton.faris@hawaii.edu to reserve a seat for this seminar or for more information.

This event is made possible by the late Dr. Dai Ho Chun through his estate gift, which established The Dai Ho Chun Endowment for Distinguished Lecturers at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Colleges of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Chun was a distinguished and visionary educator. This lecture is also sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities and the College of Languages, Linguistics & Literature.
