The Hawaiʻi Pacific Islands Campus Compact (HIPICC), administered by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Service-Learning Program, was recently awarded a three-year education grant totaling $1.2 million by the Corporation for National and Community Service‘s Learn and Serve America program. The grant, entitled "Systems of Service in Island Societies," will award HIPICC with $400,000 each year over a three-year period.

HIPICC will use the funds to go towards their initiatives to promote civic engagement in higher education, including health promotion and disease prevention education; after-school programs; protection and restoration of wildlife, water, land, coastal zones and vegetation; homeland security and public safety; and senior care and citizen education. In addition, HIPICC will support cross-institutional collaboration in building local capacity in each island society.

HIPICC, a member of National Campus Compact, is an organization of college and university presidents in the state established to enhance the links between their respective colleges and universities and their local communities. The members of the compact are dedicated to enhancing students‘ sense of personal and social responsibility, citizenship and awareness of the unique communities and peoples, while reinvigorating higher education‘s concern for improving the quality of life in our society. The current membership includes all six universities and ten community colleges in Hawaiʻi, as well as Guam, American Samoa and Northern Marianas.

Learn and Serve America is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and AmeriCorps. In addition to providing grants, Learn and Serve America serves as a national resource on service-learning to nonprofit groups, educational institutions, teachers, faculty members, schools and community groups. Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation is working to build a culture of citizenship, service and responsibility. For further information, visit www.nationalservice.org.
