WHAT – Renowned American political activist, scholar and author Angela Davis gives keynote presentation at UH Mānoas Kennedy Theatre.  Davis is also guest teaching a graduate course on American punishment at UH Mānoa

●      Yesterday, April 7, was the first day of four of Davis guest teaching a weekly graduate course that examines the history of American criminal punishment

●      On Friday, April 8 (7–8:15 p.m.), Davis will be giving a keynote presentation at UH Mānoa’s Kennedy Theatre and on speaking Wednesday, April 13 (6–7:30 p.m.) at the Mission Memorial Auditorium.

●      Davis’ rise to the national scene came in 1969, when she was removed from her teaching position at UCLA due to her social activism and membership in the Communist Party, USA.

●      She was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List on false charges in 1970 and was the subject of an intense police search that drove her underground and culminated in one of the most famous trials in recent U.S. history.

●      During her 16-month incarceration, a massive international Free Angela Davis campaign was organized, leading to her acquittal in 1972.

●      Davis is a founding member of Critical Resistance, a national organization dedicated to the dismantling of the prison industrial complex and has been active in the Black Lives Matter movement.

●      Davis is a prolific writer and lecturer and is currently a distinguished professor emerita in the History of Consciousness and feminist studies departments at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
