University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Architecture students Arnulfo J. Castillo and Heidi Newton placed second in the Annual International Student Design Competition sponsored by the Metal Construction Association (MCA).

This metal-in-construction design competition challenged advanced architecture students to address architectural, structural, functional and environmental issues while designing a Skate Park/Community Center in a historical park within one of Chicago‘s most dynamic neighborhoods.

Castillo and Newton are both third year doctoral candidates in the UH Mānoa School of Architecture. UHM School of Architecture Associate Professor Fabrizio Medosi provided guidance for the project submission.

MCA received more than 85 entries from students throughout North America. The projects were judged by a panel of architects using criteria based on creative use of metal, effectiveness in meeting needs, efficient implementation of building systems, and consideration to preserving/improving the surrounding environment.

The Metal Construction Association brings together the diverse metal-in-construction industry for the purpose of expanding the use of metal in construction through marketing, technology, and education

MCA awarded the second place winners with $1,000, the UH School of Architecture was given $500 and the faculty sponsor was awarded $250.
