Dr. William Haning, 2014 Hawai`i Physician of the Year

The Hawai`i Medical Association has selected John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Professor and Psychiatrist William Haning as the 2014 Physician of the Year. The award recognizes physicians who go above and beyond the call of the medical profession in addressing important health-care issues that affect our local communities.

That certainly describes Dr. Haning, who has been a teacher, researcher and community leader in the field of addiction medicine, serving both the State of Hawai`i and the U.S. military.

Dr. Haning is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry at JABSOM. An alumnus of the medical school’s first four-year class in 1975, Dr. Haning is President of the JABSOM Alumni Association, and has helped in the training of medical students and MD Residents at JABSOM under two Deans, including last year’s HMA Physician of the Year, Dean Jerris Hedges.

Haning holds numerous academic awards including the American Psychiatry Association’s Nancy C.A. Roeske Certificate, the John M. Hardman Award for Mentorship from the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawai`i, and the University of Hawai`i Regents’ Medal.

A former head of Graduate Medical Education, Dr. Haning currently is Associate Chair for Education and Director of the Core Psychiatric Residency Training Program.  He is also Principal Investigator and Co-Director of the Pacific Addiction Research Center, where he has specialized in studying methamphetamine use disorders. He was the founding Medical Director of Hina Mauka, a residential treatment facility concentrating in addictive disorders complicated by other illnesses, and a past Director of Addiction Psychiatry at the Hawai`i State Hospital. Most recently, he helped the Hawai`i Judiciary launch a special court for Driving While Intoxicated cases.

Dr. Haning has served the U.S. armed services for 37 years, including providing oversight of medical care for Marine Corps Forces Pacific at the outset of the 2003 Iraq War. He received the Legion of Merit for other services to the U.S. Marine Corps as Force Surgeon.

Dr. Haning will receive the HMA award at the 2014 Ola Pono Ike Medical Gala, October 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort.
