UH Hilo HOSA team turns in strong national performance

A team from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo made its first appearance in the National Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) competition a memorable one by capturing second place in the category of Public Service Announcement in the Post-secondary (college) level.

An estimated 200 Hawai’i students from high school and college took part in the conference held June 25-28 in Orlando, Florida, which attracted some 8,400 national competitors from 48 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Italy. 

UH Hilo’s team comprised of Team Captain Lark Jason Canico, fellow incoming sophomores Ridge Cabaccang and Sheldon Cabudol, and accompanied by advisor Dr. Cecilia Mukai, created a 30-second commercial on preventing child hunger that included a four-minute oral presentation. HOSA is a national student organization established in 1976, and includes 165,000 members. The organization’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare to all people. Membership in the UH Hilo club is open to all students and majors interested in becoming part of a unique and rewarding experience.
