HONOLULU — Hawai'i Community College (Hawai'i CC) has announced the search for a permanent chancellor will begin shortly. The campus, located in Hilo, serves approximately 7,000 credit and non-credit students annually.

"Faculty, staff and students have clearly conveyed to me that they want a strong visionary leader who will listen to all the constituencies and be a passionate advocate for the college," said UH President Evan Dobelle. "The best candidates will be dynamic individuals who are focused on growth and can build relationships with business, cultural, governmental and academic communities as well as be visible and involved in the community and fully understand the mission of the community colleges is access and affordability for our local citizens."

The Board of Regents approved the appointment of Shirley Daniel as interim chancellor of Hawai'i CC for six months with a possible extension for an additional six months on July 1, 2003. Daniel replaced Chancellor Sandra Sakaguchi who accepted a special assignment to oversee the planning and design of the new UH Kona campus. As interim chancellor, Dobelle charged Daniel with focusing on several areas including leading the search for a permanent chancellor - a position for which she is not a candidate.

"President Dobelle charged me with the task of leading an open and inclusive faculty driven process to select a permanent Chancellor for Hawai'i CC," said Daniel. "We now have a process in place that will include input and representation from all constituencies and help us identify the best suited candidate to lead Hawai'i CC into the future."

For the Hawai'i CC chancellor search, there will be a 20-member search advisory committee chaired by Daniel. The committee will include faculty members, clerical representatives, administrative/professional/technical representatives, external community leaders, a dean or director, a community college chancellor from the UH system and a student.

The position will be advertised extensively. The first screening deadline for nominations and applications will be November 17, 2003 however the position will continue to be recruited. In other words, the search advisory committee may accept and consider nominations and applications until the position is filled.

The search advisory committee will review and consider all nominations and applications during November and December before narrowing the field down to the top candidates. On-site interviews for the top candidates will take place in December and January and will consist of professional meetings, social events and question and answer sessions. In addition, each candidate will have an in-depth interview with the search advisory committee and with Dobelle. At the conclusion of the on-site interviews the search advisory committee and Dobelle will meet to select a finalist. The new Hawai'i CC chancellor is expected to be announced in March or April, pending Board of Regents approval.
