David Alethea, a professor of philosophy at UH West Oʻahu, has been recognized as one of 15 recipients of the 2003 Regents‘ Medal for Excellence in Teaching. Presented by the UH Board of Regents, the teaching excellence medal pays tribute to community college faculty members for their extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal values beneficial to students.

Alethea brings a keen intellect to the classroom, a capacity to make clear difficult philosophical concepts, and an obvious love for his discipline. He knows his subject thoroughly and is eager to transmit it to his students. Alethea‘s students are free to give their own opinion in his classes enabling them to develop their ideas after testing them out against his own presentations. He constantly offers courses covering the whole spectrum of philosophy, from Ancient Greece to modern Existentialism. His students praise his teaching, calling him, "challenging," "brilliant," and "passionate."

Alethea will be recognized for his excellence in teaching along with other UH award winners at a system-wide ceremony in October.
