The UH Mānoa Library, Hawai’inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and Native Books/Na Mea Hawai’i are collaborating to bring the 2nd TEDxManoa to Honolulu this Friday, October 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the East-West Center’s Imin Center, Keoni Auditorium.

The purpose of this independently organized event, licensed by TED, is to highlight innovative solutions that incorporate native ingenuity, knowledge and practices with 21st century information and technology as part of the solution for issues such as sustainability, health, food safety and education.  Mānoa is the perfect location because of the wealth of learning and knowledge in the valley.  It is also a gathering place to exchange ideas.  We have obtained a TEDx Talk license and have booked the East-West Center’s Imin Center, Keoni Auditorium, for the all-day event.

TEDxMānoa will provide inspirational talks by native speakers and networking opportunities for the community.  The event will feature 8 talks by native speakers to stress the importance of collaborative/communal/ ancestral ‘ike and mana‘o.  The talks will be filmed and uploaded to the TEDx YouTube Channel for open access.  Please plan to attend the full day.  Due to professional filming, the doors will be closed until official breaks for coffee and lunch.

The TEDx format is a day-long presentation of talks that are 5-18 minutes in length.  The TEDxMānoa event will begin with an official TED Talk on DVD from TED.com.  Here is the final list of speakers (in alphabetical order) : (http://vimeo.com/76015768)

ʻŌiwi TV has been awarded the contract to record the TEDxManoa Talks that will be uploaded to the TEDx Talks Youtube Channel.  ʻŌiwi TV reaches across generations, socio-economic statuses, and geographic locations as the sole media venue where the Hawaiian language, culture and perspective thrive. Through Digital Channel 326, ʻŌiwi TV reaches over 220,000 households across the entire State via Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s network. Through its website, mobile, and social media venues, ʻŌiwi TV is reaching Hawaiians everywhere and engaging a generation of Hawaiians that expect to access anything and everything from anywhere at anytime.

In 2009, ʻŌiwi TV partnered with Oceanic Time Warner Cable, the Kamehameha Schools and the ʻAha Pūnana Leo to break the barrier and for the first time establish a Native Hawaiian television station. ʻŌiwi TV is Native Hawaiian owned and operated – empowering people to assert their Native Hawaiian identity and promote outcomes that benefit our community, our natural resources, and most importantly our future generations.

There will be an information table for non-profit community organizations to share brochures about their programs and services with the attendees.  We encourage organizations to publicize internships, collaborative initiatives, community programs and service learning positions for high school and college students.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx.  TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.  Our event is called TEDxMānoa, where x = independently organized TED event.  At TEDxMānoa, a TEDTalks video and live speakers will be combined to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.  The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, California, along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs; the annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, the recently launched TED-Ed platform for students and educators, the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide, and TEDBooks, short e-books by speakers that elaborate on a single idea originally presented on TED's stage. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
