Several students were presented cash awards at the 28th Annual Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY) luncheon on Thursday, April 11, 2013, for their outstanding work as top employees on the UH Mānoa campus, according to Noreen Okikawa, director of university student employment. The Teaching Science as Inquiry team was also recognized for excellence.

The Mānoa Career Center announced top honors went to Tracie Lock, an Event Services Manager at the Meetings & Event Services department of Student Life and Development.  She was awarded a $1,000 cash scholarship.

“On two occasions, the Board of Regents sent a commendation letter including recognition for Tracie’s efforts and praising her for a job well done,” said Laura Shimabukuro, Lock’s supervisor, who nominated her for the award. “She is one of the first I will look toward to ask for feedback and ideas about how a certain set-up might work. She is very insightful and able to provide quality solutions. Her insights have not only helped her fellow managers and associates, but have been very valuable to me.”

Lock was also selected as the SEOTY winner for the State of Hawai‘i in the Western Association of Student Employment Administrators.

Other winners include:

  1. Trevor Manu, nominated by Assistant Specialist Joannie Dobbs. Manu is a student assistant at the Human Nutrition, Food & Animal Sciences and is a junior majoring in Art. Manu was awarded a $750 cash scholarship.
  2. Ashli Hann, nominated by Student Consumerism Specialist Dean Nushida. Hann is a Student Supervisor at the Financial Aid Services and is a senior majoring in Psychology. Hann was awarded a $500 cash scholarship.
  3. Andrew Baker, nominated by Academic Support Pua Auyong-White. Baker is a Student Assistant in the Student Equity, Excellence & Diversity department and is a sophomore majoring in Communicology. Baker was awarded a $500 cash scholarship.

The Student Employee of the Year Team winner is from Teaching Science as Inquiry.  The team was nominated by Joanna Philippoff, Teaching Science as Inquiry Program Manager, and Lauren Kaupp, Teaching Science as Inquiry Science Specialist. The team consists of Brittany Supnet and Jordan Wang.

UH Mānoa has celebrated the Student Employee of the Year since 1986, recognizing outstanding student employees throughout campus. The cash awards are from proceeds generated by the annual Craft Fair & Silent Auction, traditionally held on campus on the Friday before Thanksgiving.
