Retired Hawai‘i Supreme Court Justice James Duffy Jr. will deliver the commencement address at the May 12 graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2013 at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

Duffy served on the Supreme Court beginning in 2003, retiring last year when he turned 70. He has subsequently opened a small private practice law firm, chiefly to represent former clients and friends. He also is a lecturer at the Law School.

Commencement ceremonies begin at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 12 at Andrews Amphitheater, with graduates marching across Dole Street at 4 p.m. from the Law School courtyard.

The class of 2013 includes 110 graduates receiving JD degrees and 13 foreign-trained lawyers receiving LLM degrees.

The graduating class chose Professor Danielle Conway, the Michael J. Marks Distinguished Professor of Business Law, to speak on behalf of the faculty and Wayne Wagner, a member of the class, will take the podium to address the gathering. Elika Otoya-Stimpson will make remarks on behalf of the part-time evening program and Seyed Amin Alemohammad from Iran will speak on behalf of the LLM students.

Law School Dean Avi Soifer said, “We are particularly proud of these graduates. They embody both the exceptional diversity and the outstanding quality of the students we are privileged to teach.” He added: “The outdoor ceremony is always a chicken-skin event and we welcome the entire community to attend and to celebrate these graduates with us.”

The graduation is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in Zone 20.
