UH alumni, state legislators and the community focused on health and wellness for a couple of hours today, at the annual "UH Day" at the State Legislature. This year’s theme was “Healthy People, Healthy Pets”, and representatives from UH programs across the state featured a variety of hands-on exhibits to promote good health for people and pets.

The educational event featured newborn lambs, as members of Windward Community College’s Veterinary Technician program offered free check-ups for pets.  Governor Neil Abercrombie and his dog Kanoa visited the exhibit where the state's First Dog was given a clean bill of health.

UH Hilo's College of Pharmacy students offered free blood pressure tests, and Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Jill Tokuda volunteered.

Senator Mike Gabbard took a balance test at Kapi'olani Community College's Physical Therapy Assistance exhibit.  The college also offered flossing, brushing and other demonstrations by its Nursing, Health Sciences and Emergency programs.

The John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and its Center for Native Hawaiian Excellence offered a variety of screenings, and were on hand to discuss illness prevention.  The UH Cancer Center offered an array of information on cancer prevention, resources and its new state-of-the-art facility, along with interactive games and prizes.

And UH Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources featured a wealth of information on wellness, diet, exercise and childhood obesity.

"UH Day" at the State Capitol is part of the State Legislature's annual Education Week coordinated by the Hawai’i State Senate Committee on Education, chaired by Senator Jill Tokuda.
