HONOLULU – Kapi'olani Community College will be celebrating the culinary artistry, skill and creativity of its students in the biennial Hawai'i Culinary Competition Expo featuring a Cold Food Salon Competition, a "live" Hot Food Cooking Competition and the HFM Food and Product Show. This event takes place on Friday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Kapi'olani campus.

Approximately 800 students currently study culinary arts at six community colleges statewide. In order to encourage creativity and imagination, and to introduce elements of competition, the Culinary Institute of the Pacific assists in organizing this culinary salon allowing students to compete in a variety of food presentation and categories following the guidelines of the American Culinary Federation.

In preparation for the competition, renowned chefs Alan Wong and Peter Merriman provided tips for success to a packed, standing-room-only audience of student chefs. HFM Foodservice, a partner for the competition, presented a check for $10,000, and an additional $5,000 check for the Hawai'i's Rising Star Chefs.

Judging the student's work this year is a panel of award-winning chefs sponsored by the Lyle L. Guslander Distinguished Visitors Program. They are: Joseph Decker, who teaches pastry arts at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan; Russell Scott, Dean of Education of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Greystone; and Stafford DeCambra, corporate executive chef at the Poarch Band of Creek Indians’ Wind Creek Casino and Hotel.
