Beginning in early 2013, a large portion of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Hamilton Library will undergo an extensive construction project.  The work to be done will consist of necessary upgrades to the 35-year-old air conditioning system, as well as the replacement of some of the older light fixtures and suspended ceilings. This project is limited to floors 1-5 of the “Phase II” part of Hamilton Library (i.e., the mauka portion of the main building).

Work will be done in stages, and will impact different floors and sections of the Library at various times, affecting both access to collections and library services. Currently, the 10-month project is expected to begin early in 2013 and continue through the summer of that year.

Some or all of the materials in the Asia, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Charlot, Hawaiian and Pacific, and Northeast Asia and Russia Collections will be inaccessible and unavailable at different times for a month or more at a time. Reference and instructional services for these collections may be disrupted as well.  In addition, some Library classrooms, lockers, research carrels, and group study rooms may be unavailable for all or part of the project.

The fourth floor (Asia Collection) and the fifth floor (Hawaiian & Pacific Collection) may each be closed for six weeks or more during the Summer (June through August) of 2013.  The reading rooms of the Asia Collection and the Hawaiian & Pacific Collection will be closed during the time that those particular floors are under construction.  Reference service and instruction related to these collections will be limited during this period.  In addition, affected faculty offices in the successive construction zones will be temporarily relocated to other areas of the Library.

If you are planning to travel to Honolulu for research at the Library during 2013, please contact the Library well in advance. If you are working on research or writing projects for which you will need access to the collections, please contact the Library as soon as possible.

If you expect to be teaching a Spring or Summer course in 2013 that will require access to affected collections, contact the appropriate collection to discuss your class and the handling of research or library assignments.
