The ARWU ranks the top 100 universities in numerical order, starting with Harvard and Stanford, then lists universities in larger groups: 101-150, 151-200, 201-300, 301-400, and 401-500.
“Being recognized in this second tier is a high honor, given that there are thousands of universities in the world, and the ARWU ranks 500 of them,” said Chancellor Tom Apple. “It’s notable that 53 of the top 100 are American universities, so this ranking considers UH Manoa to be between 54 and 67 in the actual ranking of universities in the U.S.”
UH Manoa’s American peers in the ranking include the University of Virginia, while its Asian peers include the top university in Korea, Seoul National; the top university in Singapore, National University in Singapore; the top university in Taiwan, National Taiwan University; and the top university in all of Latin America, the University of Sao Paolo.
The flagship campus within the UH System also ranks ahead of schools such as Oregon State University (150-200), the University of Oregon (201-300), and Notre Dame (201-300).
No university in China is ranked in the top 150, and only seven universities in Japan are in the top 150.
