New Dean of CCECS Announced

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo announces the appointment of Dr. MargaretHaig as the new dean of the College of Continuing Education and CommunityService (CCECS), effective April 16, 2001. The announcement was made byDr. Rachel Fordyce, UH Hilo vice chancellor for academic affairs.

"My goals as the newest dean are to work to increase both enrollmentsand revenues for the University," said Haig.

"As the 'front door' of the University, offering summer sessionsand expanded credit and non-credit classes, the College aims to work incollaboration with other colleges and units to attract new and expandedpopulations to campus."

Haig's first priority is to develop the new English as a Second Languageprogram, called the English Language Institute. ELI will be working inconjunction with the UH Hilo Admissions Office, the English Department,and the International Student Office to recruit international students andthen assist with grammar, reading, and composition skills. The programwill also oversee the students' orientation, language laboratories, andtutoring.

"Students are encouraged to transition into degree programs on campus,"said Haig. "This summer, the College has enrolled students from Korea,China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Federated Republic of Micronesia."

Haig said she is extremely impressed with the unique opportunities offeredat UH Hilo.

"UH Hilo offers excellent teaching in small classes, and the campusis a safe and caring environment for a diverse student population,"said Haig. "Field experiences in the natural environment are unparalleledany place else on Earth, and with the University's international focus,we offer a living laboratory for cultural and environmental experiences.

"I look forward to working with other campus units to expand offeringsin all areas of the University," she added.

Haig arrives at UH Hilo after serving as dean of student services atHonolulu Community College for the past three years. She holds a master'sin social science from Boston University, and a master's in public health,a master's in business administration, and a doctorate in education fromUH Manoa.
