Governor Abercrombie was in attendance, as a groundbreaking ceremony was held this morning for the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, which will transform UH Mānoa’s only on-campus, all-purpose track and field, football, soccer and recreational facility into a dynamic center for student activity. The new building will house and support a wide variety of activities and events.

The project is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Hawai‘i State Legislature and The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, a charitable organization founded in 1967 by the late Clarence T.C. Ching. The astute businessman and visionary philanthropist was a major supporter of school and community organizations, including University of Hawai‘i Athletics.

The new facility will be a three-story building on the mauka side of the existing Clarence T.C. Ching Field. The interior will include offices, locker rooms and a meeting room.

The complex will also include a sand volleyball venue with 800 seats and two competition courts. In addition, lofted space for future facilities, such as concessions, a ticket office and broadcast booths, will be provided.

Target completion date is slated for Winter 2013. Upon completion, the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex will be a LEED Certified Building and become the new home for women’s soccer, cross country, track and field and sand volleyball.

"I extend my appreciation and gratitude to The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation for helping to fulfill Mr. Ching’s vision, building on his legacy to enrich communities throughout Hawai‘i,” said Chancellor Tom Apple. “I'm a strong believer that sports is an outlet that can lead students to varied learning opportunities to become successful--both on and off the field--gaining key life lessons such as discipline, time management, teamwork and leadership.”
