The public is invited to attend the annual Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility Apprentice Career Fair on Saturday, April 14, at Honolulu Community College. From those that apply, 100 will be able to earn $19.36 per hour with full federal benefits while obtaining a government-sponsored associate degree in applied trades from Honolulu Community College.

Honolulu Community College (874 Dillingham Boulevard)
Courtyard of Bldg. 5 and Cafeteria

Pearl Harbor is expecting a huge exodus from its federal workforce in the next five to 10 years and the career fair is designed to minimize the effects of this situation. It is also believed that the work will substantially increase when the deployed vessels return from the current conflicts.

Recruitment will be for the Pearl Harbor Apprenticeship Program. Positions are also available in the engineering department. Information on these positions will be available at the career fair.

Applications for the 2013 class will be available online at usajobs.gov. Additional information can be found at www.navsea.navy.mil/shipyards/pearl. It is highly recommended that applicants attend the career fair to learn more about the program and the positions available.

All applicants will be notified of their acceptance via email and will be required to take the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Work Readiness Test that will be administered by the Pearl Harbor Human Resources Department at the Fleet and Family Service Center located in the Moanalua Shopping Center.

Over 5,000 people attend the annual event with lines forming early in the morning. To be eligible, candidates must:
  • Be a United States citizen;
  • Be 18 years of age by January 2013;
  • Be a high school graduate or have a GED; and
  • Pass a physical exam, a security clearance, and the Work Readiness Test.
Computers are available at Oahu Work Links Centers, the neighbor islands one-stop centers and at Honolulu Community College. Individuals with questions can call Pearl Harbor at 474-9216 or Jeannie Shaw at 473-8000 ext. 6290 or 295-6893.

Since 1975, Honolulu Community College has been an educational partner with the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Over the last 10 years, the Apprentice Program has provided opportunities for selected trainees to work alongside journeymen and receive trade theory training while working toward an Associate in Applied Science degree. They continue for two more years as Apprentices until they graduate as Journeyman Mechanics. Honolulu CC is proud to have graduated more than 2,000 student apprentices that provide maintenance to our nation’s Naval fleet that are “Fit to Fight."
