Michael Drake, MD, Chancellor of the University of California Irvine, will speak this Friday, February 10, at UH Mānoa's John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) in Kakaako. His talk, titled “What is the Role of the Academic Medical Center & How Do Global Health Commitments Relate to Social Determinants of Health?” begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Medical Education Building, Room 315 of the JABSOM campus
at 651 Ilalo Street.
 
Before becoming UC Irvine Chancellor, Dr. Drake, an award-winning teacher and researcher, was the Vice President overseeing academic program policy at the University of California’s 15 health sciences schools located on seven campuses. He directed the special research programs in tobacco, breast cancer and HIV/AIDS; co-chaired the California/Mexico Health Initiative; launched the PRIME (Program In Medical Education) initiatives to train physicians to serve the needs of underserved populations statewide; and served with the California Health Benefits Review Program.
 
“Our students, faculty and partners in health are looking forward to Dr. Drake’s presentation,” said JABSOM Dean Jerris Hedges, MD. “Especially considering his role in promoting diversity in health care and in the research of tobacco, breast cancer and HIV/AIDS, all of which are priorities at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s academic health sciences programs.”
 
Chancellor Drake is recipient of the Burbridge Award for Public Service, Asbury Award (clinical science), Michael J. Hogan Award (laboratory science), UCSF School of Medicine Clinical Teaching Award, S.J. Kimura Teaching Award, UCSF School of Medicine Alumnus of the Year Award, and the Gold-Headed Cane Society Speaker’s Cane. In addition, he received the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Herbert W. Nickens Award and The California Wellness Foundation’s Champion of Diversity Award. Most recently, he was awarded the inaugural Binational Health Pioneer Award at the 18th International HIV/AIDS Conference. He has served as trustee and president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and as chair of the board of trustees of the Association of Academic Health Centers.
 
Dr. Drake, along with University of Hawaiʻi President M.R.C. Greenwood and JABSOM Dean Hedges, is a fellow of the Institute of Medicine. Drake also is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He is an alumnus of Stanford University (AB) and UC San Francisco (MD).
