Statement from UH President Evan S. Dobelle on Tragic Loss of UH Swim Team Member

It is with great sadness and regret that the entire University of Hawai'i family mourns the tragic death of Mike Sheldt. I knew Mike well and he was a promising young athlete and scholar — his loss is personally devastating to me and I am struggling to make sense of a situation that has no explanation. I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow students and teammates."

"A UH freshman, Mike excelled in the pool as well as the classroom. He was a state champion swimmer, member of the National Honor Society and a Scholastic All American. Mike came from Charlotte, North Carolina to attend UH. His spirit, dedication and enthusiasm will be cherished by all who know him."
