Distinguished government and telecommunication officials from 12 Pacific Island countries will be attending a three-day workshop next Monday to Wednesday, July 18-20, 2011, at Campus Center rooms 309-310 at UH Mānoa. The workshop, which begins at 9 a.m. each day, is titled “Monitoring and Evaluation of National Information Communication Technologies (ICT) Policies and Plans for Pacific Island Countries.”

Participants will be distinguished government officials from Pacific Island Departments and Ministries of Communication. The 12 Pacific Island countries sending representatives are the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, Solomon, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

This training is significant because these Pacific Island countries are currently developing their national information communication technology plans and are learning to evaluate and monitor progress in reaching national ICT goals.

The event is co-sponsored by three entities: the Telecommunications and Information Policy Group/PEACESAT of the Social Science Research Institute at UH Mānoa, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of the United Nations ICB4PAC (ICT Capacity building for the Pacific) project, and the European Union.

Opening remarks and keynote address will be delivered by Gisa Fuatai Purcell, ICB4PAC Project Coordinator, who is based in Fiji. Also giving presentations will be Gordon Bruce, Director Department of Information Technology, City and County of Honolulu; and Sanjeev “Sonny” Bhagowalia, Chief Information Officer, Office of Information Management and Technology, State of Hawaii.
