The College of Engineering mourns the loss of visiting professor Are Hjorungnes, 40, who died from injuries suffered from an accidental fall while on a run with the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team (HURT) in Mokuleia on May 14.

Hjorungnes, a professor from the University of Oslo, Norway, was a visiting professor with the UH Mānoa College of Engineering’s Electrical Engineering Department conducting research on signal processing and communications and has written books on complex matrix derivatives.  His sabbatical at UH Mānoa began in June 2010 and was scheduled to end this July.

“The College of Engineering was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Are Hjorungnes.  He was a gifted researcher and will be missed by the friends and colleagues that he developed here at the College of Engineering,” said Dean Peter Crouch.

A memorial service was held at the Dillingham Airfield on May 22.
