Seventeen outstanding UH faculty awarded Regents' Medal for Excellence

HONOLULU – Fifteen University of Hawaiʻi faculty members have been selected as recipients of the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching, and two were selected as recipients of the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research.
 
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes faculty who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal values beneficial to students, was awarded to:
  • Abby C. Collier, Assistant Professor, John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Tropical Medicine & Medical Microbiology, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • Ann N. Emmsley, Associate Professor, Agriculture, Science, Technology, Electronics & Mathematics Department, University of Hawai‘i Maui College
  • Gene F. Harada, Professor, Carpentry, Hawai‘i Community College
  • Nancy A. Heu, Professor (Librarian), Academic Support, Windward Community College
  • Yukio Kataoka, Associate Professor, Language, Linguistics & Literature, Kapi‘olani Community College
  • Chae Ho Lee, Assistant Professor, Department of Art & Art History, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • Roberta M. Martel, Instructor, Social Sciences, Leeward Community College
  • John S. Melish, Professor, John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • Joy A. Nagaue, Associate Professor, Fashion Technology, Honolulu Community College
  • Kirstin Pauka, Professor, Department of Theatre & Dance, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • Roberto C. Pelayo, Assistant Professor, Mathematics, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo
  • Stephen V. Taylor, Instructor, Physical Science, Science and Mathematics Division, Kaua‘i Community College
  • Garyn K. Tsuru, Assistant Professor, Social Sciences/Psychology, University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu
  • Jenifer S. Winter, Assistant Professor, School of Communications, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • Christine R. Yano, Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research, which recognizes a faculty member’s scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of all in the community, nation and the world, was awarded to:
  • J. Patrick Henry, Professor and Astronomer, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • Lisa J. Kewley, Associate Astronomer, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
These individuals will be recognized for their achievements along with other UH award recipients at the annual Convocation ceremony scheduled for September 27, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Kennedy Theatre on the UH Mānoa campus. The ceremony is open to the public at no charge, and no reservations are needed.
