84 students participate in Leeward District Science Fair

The Leeward District Science Fair was held at Leeward Community College on Friday, February 11, 2011. Fifty-one projects presented by 84 students from schools throughout the Leeward District were reviewed by Leeward CC faculty and staff and community judges.
Projects in animal science, behavioral & social science, biochemistry, cellular & molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, earth & planetary science, energy & transportation, bioengineering, electrical & mechanical engineering, environmental science, medicine & health, microbiology, physics & astronomy and plant sciences were featured. Top ranking students will qualify for the State Science Fair to be held at the Hawaii Convention Center in March and also qualify for the International Science Fair.

Helmut Kae, Natalia Schmidt, William Albritton and Mike Reese served as the Finalist Judging Committee.

Twenty-eight faculty and staff members along with seven community members volunteered their time as judges. The faculty and staff from Leeward CC are: Wiliam Albritton, Larry Andres, Brad Ashburn, Tiana Cho, Patricia Domingo, Blake Hunrick, Frank Iha, Justin Itoh, Helmut Kae, Gholam Khaleghi, Roger Kwok, Michael Lane, Danilo Licudine, Raymond Liongson, Priscilla Millen, Wanda Miyamoto, Corin Nishimura, James Oda, Alex Ramos, Michael Reese, Natalia Schmidt, Adrienne Sentell, Frank Stanton, Celeste Tanabe, Jennie Thompson, Catherine Walker, Jenny Watada and Ed Wiggers. Also serving as judges: Al Asato, State Lab; Mike Ferguson, Honolulu Community College - chemistry; Miles Nirei, UH Safety; Paul Sherard Honolulu Community College - physics; Randy Shimabukuro, military engineer; Lori Suyama, State Lab; and Paul Wessel UH Manoa - geophysics.
