Drs. Nanette Kapulani Mossman Judd from the John A. Burns School of Medicine, and Barbara Gibson from the Department of Oceanography, are the recipients of the 2010 Annual Faculty Diversity Enhancement award at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The award program was developed by the UH Mānoa Commission on Diversity in order to recognize UH Mānoa faculty who have demonstrated a significant commitment to enhancing diversity at the UH Mānoa campus above and beyond their current assigned responsibilities.

Under Dr. Judd’s visionary leadership, JABSOM’s Imi Ho’ola Post-Baccalaureate Program has proven to be a successful education model for enhancing diversity and has helped many individuals achieve their goals of becoming physicians. Her contribution to diversity at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is best illustrated by the successful medical careers of Imi Ho’ola alumni. Ninety-six percent of Imi Ho’ola graduates have gone on to provide health services to disadvantaged or under-served populations; many of whom are serving in rural communities on the neighbor islands. Imi Ho’ola’s success in producing highly qualified and dedicated physicians from disadvantaged backgrounds clearly demonstrates Dr. Judd’s life-long commitment to diversity.

Dr. Gibson’s selection was based on her demonstrated commitment to diversity within the STEM disciplines through the Ka ‘Imi ‘Ike Program; and her tireless teamwork and partnerships with organizations that share her goals. As principal investigator of the Ka `Imi `Ike Program, she successfully recruits under-represented students into the geosciences. Dr. Gibson’s efforts with both the Ka ‘Imi ‘Ike Program and the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) Scholars Program, resulted in a multi-tiered series of internships and training opportunities, that allow students to work directly with faculty at the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology (SOEST). Dr. Gibson is known for her solid rapport with her students and her dedicated work to prepare them for a career in geosciences.

The UH Mānoa Commission on Diversity will accept nominations for the 2011 Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award beginning in February. For further information, contact Kay Fukuda at klfukuda@hawaii.edu.
