UH Mānoa's College of Education Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science (KRS) Entry-Level Graduate Athletic Training Education Program was awarded continued accreditation until 2020 by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The program provides initial preparation of graduate students for national board exams and for a career in the health care profession.

UH Mānoa associate professor Michelle Cleary, who is the program director and report writer, explained, “Similar to other health care professions, the athletic training profession has undergone rapid changes in the educational preparation of entry-level practitioners, which requires national accreditation involving documentation of instruction and evaluation of over 1,200 competencies and proficiencies in the classroom and clinical experiences.”

After a comprehensive evaluation, which included a self-study, an on-site visit, and a review of materials, CAATE determined that the program met all of the nationally recognized standards. Standards for entry-level athletic training education were established with the support of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Inc.

“The continued accreditation of the Entry-Level Graduate Athletic Training Education Program speaks volumes for the quality of the program and the commitment of the Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science and College of Education to offer reputable and nationally recognized programs,” KRS Chair Julienne Maeda said. “We remain dedicated to enhancing the integrity and reputation of the department, college, and university.”

Cleary and Maeda give commendations to KRS faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners for their role in the advancement of quality education in athletic training and the preparation of highly qualified athletic training professionals.
