Dr. Sabry Shehata, professor of agricultural economics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, presents his paper on “Market Testing of Labeled and Unlabeled GMO Papaya Fruits in Honolulu Chain Stores” at the Food Distribution Research Society's (FDRS) annual conference, October 16-20 in Destin, Florida.

The paper was a field experiment to test shoppers’ real-world response when given the choice of the Rainbow papaya, a genetically modified variety of papaya developed by the University of Hawaiʻi to be immune to the papaya ringspot virus, or an identical but unlabeled fruit.

Shehata will share his results with researchers, academics, food industry experts and government agency personnel at the FDRS conference.

The Food Distribution Research Society is the only body of scholars and practitioners in the United States dedicated to the study, monitoring and sharing of knowledge about the dramatic changes taking place in the global food system.
