The UH Mānoa Center on Disability Studies joins VSA Hawai‘i and the Department of Health Adult Mental Health Division in sponsoring a statewide juried exhibit, which features artists willing to use their artwork to combat discrimination against people with mental illness.

The forty visual artists will showcase their work in the 6th annual exhibit, “Be Original: Breaking the Barriers,” which runs until May 11 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Center at Linekona, 1111 Victoria Street.  Alban Cooper, Linekona Center’s exhibition coordinator, designed and installed the show. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Center.

Public opinion about mental illness has been negatively skewed by sensationalized coverage of tragic events involving people with mental illness. As a result, people with mental illness may be too ashamed to seek treatment and those already in treatment are often further ostracized.
