President Greenwood named to 2011 APEC Hawaii Host Committee

HONOLULU – University of Hawai‘i President M.R.C. Greenwood was introduced earlier this week by U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye as one of the members of the 2011 APEC Hawai‘i Host Committee, formed to coordinate community preparedness for one of the biggest and most important international events ever held in Hawai‘i.
Inouye said the “five-star” membership of the committee was selected for their ability to collaborate on preparations for what he called “both an opportunity and a challenge of the greatest magnitude for our state.”
In addition to Greenwood, the members of the committee include:
- CHAIR: Peter Ho, President, Bank of Hawai‘i
- VICE CHAIR: Tim Johns, President, Director & CEO, Bishop Museum
- Governor Linda Lingle
- Mayor Mufi Hannemann
- Adm. Robert F. Willard, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command
- Mike McCartney, President, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority
- Corbett Kalama, Incoming Chair, Kamehameha Schools and Senior Vice President, First Hawaiian Bank
- Patricia Loui, President, Omnitrak
- Stanley Kuriyama, President & CEO, Alexander and Baldwin
- Bert “BJ ” Kobayashi Jr., President & CEO, Kobayashi Group
Ex-officio members include Inouye, U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, and East-West Center President Charles E. Morrison.
Members of a visiting APEC advance delegation from the U.S. Department of State were also here this week, including State Dept. Senior Official for APEC Kurt Tong, the United States’ official representative to the Asia Pacific region’s leading multilateral body.
Tong said that federal officials have been “thrilled so far with the approach Hawai‘i is taking to this huge undertaking. The collegial sharing of thoughts and ideas represented by this committee are among best traditions of the American people and the people of Hawai‘i.”
APEC, or the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, is the premier forum for Asia-Pacific economies to cooperate on regional trade and investment issues. APEC’s annual meetings are hosted each year by a different member economy, and 2011 marks the first time since the first meeting convened on Blake Island, Wash., in 1993 that the United States is serving as the host. In November, President Obama selected his home state of Hawai‘i as the site of the main APEC 2011 meetings.
