Dr.  Edward “Ned” Shultz, interim dean of the School of Pacific and Asian Studies at UH Mānoa, has taken on the added responsibility of overseeing international programs, including International Student Exchanges, International Student Services and Study Abroad.   Shultz serves as special assistant for international education, and reports to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Reed Dasenbrock.

“The Asian/Pacific region is the natural focus of our international efforts, so this is a logical extension of Ned’s area of responsibility that enables us to build on an area of strength in our academic programs,” said Dasenbrock. “Our commitment to internationalization remains strong, and we are taking other steps to ensure that Mānoa’s progress in the international arena continues.”

Dasenbrock announced plans to convene a campus-wide International Working Group, with representation from other UH Mānoa vice chancellors, the John A. Burns School of Medicine, UH Foundation, Faculty Senate, and other members of the Mānoa ‘ohana. The group will be charged with developing and implementing campus-wide strategies on international efforts, including partnerships with other universities, to increase UH Mānoa’s presence in key locations, and strengthen internationalization efforts.

“A vital focus of this is the recruitment of international students, and we are also forming a task force under the Committee on Enrollment Planning to specifically see how we can strengthen this effort,” added Dasenbrock.

The responsibility of overseeing international programs was formerly administered by Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for International and Exchange Programs Jenny Samaan, who has since left the position.
