Kevin Guthrie, president of ITHAKA (Ithaka S+R, JSTOR, ArtSTOR, & Portico) will speak at UH Mānoa on April 7, 2010.  Guthrie will present two lectures in Hamilton Library room 301.  The first lecture at 9:30 a.m., entitled Books to Bytes, is a commentary on the forces impacting higher education and the dissemination of information.  Though the talk is geared for librarians, faculty is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The second lecture presented in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m., Repackaging the Library:  What Faculty Think, is a talk based on a 2009 national survey of faculty and their perceptions of the value of libraries and what librarians do.

ITHAKA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the academic community take full advantage of rapidly advancing information and networking technologies.  Ithaka’s mission is to serve scholars, researchers and students by providing the content, tools, and services needed to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways.  Ithaka was founded in 2003 and received start-up funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation.  JSTOR was founded in 1995, also with funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and merged with Ithaka in 2009.

ITHAKA’s services include:

  • Ithaka S+R - works with initiatives and organizations to develop sustainable business models and conducts research and analysis on the impact of digital media on the academic community as a whole.
  • JSTOR – helps scholars, researchers, and students discover, use, and build upon a wide range of content in a trusted digital archive of over one thousand academic journals and other content. JSTOR uses information technology and tools to increase productivity and facilitate new forms of scholarship.
  • Portico – preserves scholarly literature published in electronic form – more than 14,000 electronic journals and books – and ensures that these materials remain accessible to future scholars, researchers, and students.
