Sigfried Ramler, author of Nuremberg and Beyond: The Memoirs of Sigfried Ramler From 20th Century Europe to Hawai‘i, will speak, answer questions and sign copies of his book Wednesday, December 9 at 5 p.m. in UCB Room 118 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. There is no admission charge.

The 85-year-old Ramler, a senior adjunct fellow at the East-West Center, escaped his native Vienna to England in 1938 after Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany. His role at World War II’s end as an interrogator and interpreter at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials would recall perhaps one of the darkest periods in human history.

His courtship and subsequent marriage to a Hawaiian court reporter on the Nuremberg staff would lead him on an incredible journey from the ashes of post-war Europe across the American continent, to a life of hope and promise in Hawai‘i, to a career teaching European languages and literature at Honolulu’s prestigious Punahou Academy. Ramler’s current work at the East-West Center includes US-China study programs for university faculties in both countries.

Ramler’s book will be available for signing after the presentation, which is sponsored by the UH Hilo Center for Global Education and Exchange and the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council in cooperation with the China-U.S. Relations Program and Languages Department at UH Hilo.
