Lyon Arboretum announces a new listing of botanical, horticultural and green living classes that will help connect your life to nature. Classes will be held at Lyon Arboretum, the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa's botanical garden in a rainforest.
Classes require preregistration. To register, call 988-0461.
Instructor: Ray Baker, Saturday 10/17 9:30 -11:30 a.m. Cost: $18
Learn about the history of upper Mānoa Valley, early use of the watershed, the role of the Hawai`i Sugar Planters Association, early reforestation efforts, the development of the Mānoa Arboretum, and the transformation into the University of Hawai`i’s botanical garden. Ray Baker, Lyon Arboretum’s resident historian, will fill you in on the fascinating history of this very special place.
- Basic Pruning & Tree Care
Instructor: Steven Connolly, Saturday 10/17 9 - 11 a.m. Cost: $18
Learn best care practices for healthy trees. Steve Connolly, the Lyon Arboretum’s arborist teaches this basic tree class, covering pruning tools & techniques, tree care, and how to know when it’s time to call in an arborist for professional help.

Learn the art of backyard organic gardening, Hawaiian style! In this hands-on workshop for the whole family you will learn how to prepare and amend the soil in your yard so you can build a healthy and sustainable organic vegetable garden. Learn techniques to improve soil quality by using locally available organic materials including limu, beneficial microorganisms, vermicompost, rock phosphate, and manure. Learn child-safe methods of pest control..
- Botanical Arts: Drawing in the Garden
Instructor: Ray Tagama, Saturday 10/31, 11/7,11/14 & 11/28 9 – 11:30 a.m. Cost: $100
Learn to take the raw inspiration of nature and put it on paper. This drawing class for both beginners and advanced students interested in extending their techniques and drawing concepts for self enrichment and to further fine arts education. Beginners and advanced participants are encouraged to explore the fun of creative drawing. Class size is limited. Upon registration you will receive a materials list. Class meets 4 Saturdays.
- Botanical Arts: Watercolor
Instructor: Joel Carlson, Saturday 10/10 & 10/24 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Cost: $50
Interested in painting, inspired by the beauty of nature? This watercolor class is for both beginners and more advanced students interested in producing watercolors of a more realistic, botanical look of both florals and fruit. Beginners and more advanced participants are encouraged to enroll for a fun, creative time. Tools will be shared in painting different colors, techniques, texture, shadow and highlights. Upon registration you will receive a materials list. Class size limited, class meets two sessions.

Learn the basics of creating floral arrangements in this demonstration and hands-on class. Supply fees are included in class fee.
Instructor: Greg Lee, Friday 11/6 9 – 11 a.m. Cost: $15
Looking for innovative solutions to growing in very limited spaces? Greg Lee, featured on Good Morning America and the designer of the vertical garden at IHS will give a primer on vertical gardening.
Instructor: Dr. Christopher Dunn, Saturday 11/7 4 - 6:30 p.m. Cost: $28
Enjoy a late afternoon hike through the gardens with the Arboretum’s Director, Dr. Christopher Dunn, followed by a tasting of a selection of fine beer…explore some new visual and taste horizons! This is a rain or shine activity, so dress comfortably for the weather. Class size is limited, Adults 21 and over only.
- Flower Arranging with Fall Colors
Instructor: Patsy Gibson, Friday 11/13 9 – 11 a.m. Cost: $30
Garden Club of America Flower Judge Emeritus, and pride of The Garden Club of Honolulu, Patsy Gibson, will teach this hands-on flower arranging class using fall materials and colors.
- Lauhala Ornaments: Island Style Holidays
Instructor: Wendy Kamai, Friday 12/4 9 – 11 a.m. Cost: $30
Learn the basics of making lauhala holiday ornaments in this hands-on class. Supplies are included in class fees.
Instructor: Dr. Sheila Conant, Saturday 12/5 8:30 – 10:30 a.m. Cost: $18
Join us for a fascinating bird watching hike through the Arboretum. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring binoculars, water, raingear, mosquito repellant and a snack. Students should bring a copy of Hawaiʻi’s Birds, published by the Audubon Society (copies may be purchased at the Arboretum’s gift shop).
