The University of Hawaiʻi Advisory Presidential Selection Committee provided its Final Report to the Board of Regents on Friday, May 29. The report details the extensive process that led to two finalists, M.R.C. Greenwood and Robert Jones.

"This report shows the very complete and detailed process that resulted in the committee‘s recommendation of two highly qualified candidates to become the next UH president," said Al Landon, chairman of the Board of Regents.

The 12-member selection committee met twenty times since October 2008 and contacted more than 600 people with the assistance of search firm Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates. The committee received 78 applications. Additionally, individual committee members spoke to business and community leaders and asked for specific recommendations of individuals who could lead the university.

The report addresses criticism raised during the public interview process. The committee stressed the members reviewed a number of candidates with knowledge of and working experience in Hawaii. This was one consideration, among many, which was weighed in determining candidates who could best serve and lead the university. Ultimately, the committee recommended candidates with the best combination of attributes and experience to lead the university.

Committee members also addressed Greenwood‘s resignation as provost four years ago from the University of California. The committee was aware of the conflict of interest investigation involving Greenwood and conducted extensive due diligence into the situation. The committee concluded the matter was an inadvertent mistake, acknowledged by Greenwood, and there was no pattern of ethical lapses.

A summary of the issues raised in the public interview process and a copy of the final report is posted on the University of Hawaiʻi website at http://www.hawaii.edu/president.
