PEARL CITY, Hawaiʻi—Leeward Community College presents the 16th Annual International Education Festival on March 9 — 14, 2009 on the Pearl City campus. The Festival, based on the theme of "Global Sustainability," is expanding to a six-day schedule and features a free drawing for a round trip ticket to the Philippines.

The Festival includes five days of lectures, demonstrations and presentations on "Global Sustainability," and a culminating day of international cultural activities, food, children‘s games and entertainment.

Presenters include Representative Joey Manahan, Chair of the International Affairs Committee, Hawaiʻi State House of Representatives; Koh Ming Wei, Director/Educator, Hawaiʻi Sustainable Education Initiative; Senator Russell Kokubun, Hawaiʻi State Senate Chair, "Hawaiʻi Sustainability 2050;" Dr. Deane Neubauer, Chair, Globalization Research Center, University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa; and Henry Curtis, Executive Director, Life of the Land.

Presentations are scheduled in the Student Lounge, GT 105 and in the Library Concourse. See a complete listing of all presentations below.

The week‘s activities culminate with International Festival Day on Saturday, March 14, 9 a.m. — 2 p.m. in the College‘s Eucalyptus and Tuthill Courtyards. The day features a variety of international foods, music, and dance, along with cultural demonstrations, displays and interactive children‘s games. A special element in this year‘s event is a free drawing for a round trip ticket to the Philippines courtesy of Hawaiian Airlines

The continuous entertainment includes Gee Yun International Martial Arts, Taiko Arts of the Pacific, Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaiʻi, Mitamitaga o Samoa, Partners in Time (traditional Balkan and Middle Eastern music) with Souren Baronian, Kulintang Ensemble and African Music, Dance & Drums. A variety of international foods will be available.

The International Festival is free and open to the public. The event is a joint effort of Leeward Community College and the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, with support from Hawaiian Airlines, PacificTel and Wireless, and UNITE HERE Local 5.
