UH Manoa Music Department awards scholarships for the 2008-2009 School Year
University of Hawaiʻi at MānoaThe Music Department of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has awarded scholarships to 59 music students for the 2008 to 2009 school year. Awards are based on academic merit, musical accomplishment, financial need, and service to the department. The scholarship committee awarded general music scholarships as well as scholarships in areas including musicology, ethnomusicology and Hawaiian music, string instruments, voice, piano, and instrumental performance. Award amount ranged from $100 to a full tuition waiver with a $900 per month stipend.
"Many of these scholarships would otherwise not have been possible without thoughtful contributions from individual and organizational donors," said Music Department Chairperson Laurence Paxton. "The department is extremely thankful for the support from the community, especially since higher education budgets alone cannot meet the costs of maintaining a performing arts discipline. "
The UH Mānoa Music Department, one of eight departments in the University‘s College of Arts and Humanities, serves approximately 190 music majors, including nearly 60 graduate students; and 60 music minors. Approximately another 600 students participate in ensembles such as Asian and Pacific ensembles, bands, and choirs. The department‘s 22 fulltime faculty members and 30 adjunct faculty members include performers, composers, historians, and music educators who are dedicated to providing an educational experience in the arts that is a unique blend of solid western music tradition with the mix of Pacific region influence and world music heritage, while embracing the uniqueness of Hawaiʻi.
