HONOLULU — Shig happens! Yes, Shig, or Shigella bacteria, which is found in human feces and often spread through food when proper handwashing is not practiced. A new food safety show to premiere on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 8:30 p.m. on Oceanic Cable Channel 55 will address this, amongst other subjects, while informing and entertaining viewers on food safety and related topics.

"SHIG HAPPENS! Food Safety with Chef Henry Food Cop" will be hosted by Chef Henry Holthaus, a culinary instructor who teaches food safety at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Kapiʻolani Community College.

"Food safety can be such a boring subject," says Holthaus. "I thought I would present it in a fashion that would keep the public‘s attention, and that‘s what I hope SHIG HAPPENS will do—deliver food safety tips and knowledge in a humorous and entertaining format."

The show, which opens with an original "gangsta-rap" music video featuring "Chef Henry Food Cop," "Deputy P," "The Kūkae Cop," and "the Shigetts" demanding that viewers "wash yo hands, wash yo hands," will feature regular segments providing food safety news and tips. Among the segments are food safety-related news in "News to Chew," a short report on the FDA-allowed amounts of bugs and bug parts in foods in "Your Daily Bug Allowance," and visits to local restaurants and vendors to test food temperatures in "How Much is That Musubi in the Window?"

Each episode will focus on a different topic, such as eating smart at buffets and food allergens, as well as holiday-themed shows like "Ten Rules for Surviving Labor Day" and "How Not to Kill Your Family on Thanksgiving." "The Diving Double Dipping Digit of Doom Award" will also be presented each week to someone who blatantly violates the rules of food handling and safety.

"SHIG HAPPENS!" will air every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. A website for the show with more information should be active by August 15, and can be found at www.shighappens.com.
