Tracking down valid data about Hawaiʻi‘s older adults just got a little bit easier. The UH Center on the Family and the Hawaiʻi Executive Office on Aging have launched a Web-based Data Center on Hawaiʻi‘s Aging — the first of its kind in the nation — at http://www.uhfamily.hawaii.edu/datacenter/aging/.

The data center provides a one-stop shop, containing the most comprehensive collection of data and publications relating to Hawaiʻi‘s elderly. Statistics on the demographics, health, living conditions and other characteristics of the senior population have been gathered from federal and state sources and recorded from the year 2000 through the most recent information available at the U.S. national, Hawaiʻi state and/or county levels.

In addition, the Web site contains bibliographies or abstracts of more than 600 publications, including printable files of about a third of them, on long-term care, housing, caregiving and other subjects with a Hawaiʻi focus.

"The Aging Data Center offers a valuable tool to help both the public and private sector learn more about our diverse and rapidly growing older population," said State Aging Director Pat Sasaki. "Many in our community — from policy makers to researchers to the general public — will benefit from the data and information on the Web site."

"We recognize how difficult, costly and time consuming it is to collect the information that‘s needed," said Sylvia Yuen, Director of the UH Center on the Family. "Making valid and reliable data widely available will, we hope, contribute to better programs and services and a better future for Hawaiʻi‘s elderly."

The collection of statistics and references in Hawaiʻi‘s Aging is an on-going process, and the Web site is updated continually with the most current available information.
