HONOLULU — For the fourth straight year, students in Honolulu Community College‘s Sheet Metal and Plastics program are fabricating two American flags to be displayed on the campus mall in remembrance of September 11. The students hope to donate the flags to a non-profit organization that would display the flags year round, and they‘re seeking any interested organizations.

The two flags will be on display at the campus on Friday, Sept. 9, for the campus‘ special World Trade Center Memorial Dedication Program, which begins at 9:30 a.m. next to the Berlin Wall monument in the middle of the campus. During the program, a special memorial featuring a piece of the World Trade Center will be unveiled by family members of 9/11 victims and university administrators and special guests.

Students in the sheet metal program constructed two flags in 2002, one drab depicting 9/11 and the other bright and bold representing the strong, proud nation one year later. The two flags are on permanent display in the Sheet Metal shop.

Two new flags have been created each following year and are donated to a non-profit organization. They are free of charge but donations would be accepted from businesses or for-profit groups who are interested in obtaining the flags.

Contact instructor Danny Aiu at 845-9237 for more information or to express interest in obtaining the flags.
