Outbound Students
Thank you for your interest in Mānoa International Exchange (MIX). The information below is for UH Mānoa students going on exchange to a MIX Partner University.
How MIX Works - Outbound exchange students register as full-time students at UHM and pay their normal UHM tuition. You do not pay tuition at the partner university overseas. You are, however, responsible for travel costs, flight arrangements, housing, meals, and all other living expenses. Outbound exchange students earn transfer credit from the partner university, and may use courses taken abroad towards their degrees (major/minor) requirements with approval from the appropriate academic or faculty advisors.

Browse by Country - There are MIX Partner Universities in over 20 countries! When you apply to MIX, you will indicate your top five partner universities, in order of your preference. Check out the interactive map of MIX Locations.
Browse by Academic Area - Check out universities that offer courses in your academic area. Talk to your academic advisor to discuss using transfer courses from abroad to satisfy your major, minor, and other degree requirements.
Browse Summer Programs - Spend a summer abroad at a one of UHM's partner universities.

To go abroad in the Summer, Fall, or Academic Year (Fall & Spring):
Application period opens on the first day of the Spring Semester, and closes on February 1st.
To go abroad in the Spring:
Application period opens on the first day of the Fall Semester, and ends on September 15.

Note to Financial Aid Recipients: Financial aid students who submit late applications may face delays in receiving their financial aid awards.
It's an easy 3-step process!
1. Online MIX Application Form - This will take about 15 minutes.
2. Statement of Purpose - (NOT required for Summer Programs):
- Use the heading: MIX Statement of Purpose, Your Name, UH ID Number, Term(s) you want to go abroad
- Maximum 1 page (500 words or less)
- Your essay should address the following questions:
- Why is studying abroad important to you, and how does it fit into your academic plan?
- Which MIX Partner Universities interest you, and why?
- Why are you a good candidate for international exchange?
- What do you hope to gain while abroad, and what do you hope to contribute?
- Email your Statement of Purpose to uhmix@hawaii.edu.
3. Passport Copy - Scan & email to uhmix@hawaii.edu.
- Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after your term abroad. Need to renew your passport? Travel.State.Gov.
NOTE: Every student applying for MIX must meet personally with a MIX staff member. If you have not yet met with Darrell Kicker or Sara Otis, please come to Drop-In Advising: Tues, Weds, Thurs 1:30-3:30 PM.
A few weeks after the deadline, the MIX Committee will review applications and nominate you to an overseas university. We will notify you of your nomination via email.
Factors considered when making nominations are: GPA, academic area, class level, space available, and the balance between inbound and outbound exchange students at each partner university.
Please try to be open-minded and flexible about your placement. Students are not guaranteed their first choice.
Once you have been nominated to a MIX Partner University, you have to complete that university's application process for exchange students.
Each university has a different application process - some have online applications, while others require you to send forms and documents in the mail. Some universities require letters of recommendation, while others do not. Many universities require official transcripts, ID photographs, health forms, and more.
Important: Your nomination email will contain detailed instructions on how and when to complete the application process for your partner university. Please follow instructions carefully, and submit your application materials on time!
There are two MIX Pre-Departure Forms, which all students must complete: Health & Emergency form (online) & Pre-Departure Agreement Form (print, sign, and submit to the MIX Office).
If you receive financial aid, you must also submit a MIX Budget Form. Note: Financial aid students going abroad in the summer must submit two different financial aid forms.

There is a mandatory group orientation for all students going abroad on MIX. At orientation, we will cover your pre-departure responsibilities in detail, making sure that everyone is on track to go abroad. After that, a panel of Returnees will share their advice with you on a variety of important topics. Finally, you will have time to mingle with other students going abroad, based on geographic area.
