Pre-Departure Information for Outbound Students
- HOST UNIVERSITY APPLICATION MATERIALS: Upon being accepted as a UHM exchange student, you will be nominated to a host university abroad and prompted to complete various application materials for your host university. These may consist of online applications, preliminary course forms, and/or housing applications. Students should expect to be notified by the host university to which they were nominated via email.
- ACADEMIC PLANNING: You must meet with your UHM Academic Advisor(s) to discuss how the transfer credits you earn on MIX can be applied to your major and minor degree requirements. For this purpose, you may use the MIX Academic Advising Worksheet.
- MIX PRE-DEPARTURE FORMS: Accepted students must also complete and submit their MIX pre-departure forms to the MIX office (QLC 206). Download the forms from this page (right hand column).
- FINANCIAL AID FOR MIX: Students who filed a FAFSA should also complete a MIX Student Budget Form for Financial Aid Purposes (also at right), so that the extra costs of studying abroad can be taken into account when loans and grants are awarded. Forms may be submitted via email. Learn more about how financial aid applies to MIX.
- REGISTRATION AT UHM: Outbound exchange students continue to register as full-time students at UHM, and pay their normal UHM tuition while abroad. Prior to departure, students must register via their MyUH Portal for a MIX Placeholder course.
NOTE: MIX Placeholder courses are variable credit courses that default to one credit. Undergraduate students must increase the credit value to 12 credits per semester (6 for summer); graduate students must increase the value to 8 credits per semester (4 for summer).

- OVERSEAS HEALTH INSURANCE: All students are required to have health insurance when going on exchange. Here are some resources for students who want to purchase health insurance or supplemental coverage:
- Beta Scholastic Supplemental Travel Insurance
- HTH Study Abroad Insurance - This is a highly recommended and very comprehensive health insurance policy for U.S. students studying abroad.
- AIP International short-term insurance for study abroad - this is a good option for students who do not already have health insurance, or who want an insurance policy specifically for study abroad. Click on the link for 'International Students & Study Abroad')
- MEDEX Emergency Medical Insurance
- SOS Medical Insurance
- TW Lord & Associates Medical Insurance- This coverage is available for purchase at the Study Abroad Center in Moore Hall.
- SUBMIT COURSE SYLLABI: UHM exchange students will receive transfer credit for courses taken at their MIX host university abroad. However, in order for transfer credit to be applied, students must provide syllabi for each course they take abroad. Students may email syllabi to MIX at uhmix@hawaii.edu; it is highly recommended to submit all syllabi to MIX prior to your return to UHM, so as not to delay the transfer of your credits.
