Mānoa Arts & Minds
Aloha!
Don’t let April showers keep you from venturing to the Mānoa campus for an impressive mix of Mānoa Arts & Minds exhibits, shows and performances in the Spring 2013 semester. We thank the creative energies of our four partners – the UH Mānoa Departments of Art & Art History, Music, and Theatre & Dance, as well as Outreach College – for cultivating such thoroughly enjoyable community activities.
Phoebe Cummings
UH Art Gallery, UH Mānoa Campus
February 24 – April 5
(opening reception on Sunday, February 24 from 3:00 – 5:00pm)
Working predominantly from unfired clay, Phoebe Cummings constructs pieces directly on site as temporary installations or interventions within a place. Both material and process are of particular significance to Cummings; her intensive labor of making is heightened by the ephemerality of the work’s existence. Often the pieces come to exist only as a photograph or memory. Cummings will be developing a site-specific installation in the UH Art Gallery.
Gallery hours

Directed by Colleen Lanki, UHM alumna and guest director
Thread Hell is playwright and director Kishida Rio’s masterpiece of the Japanese avant-garde, or angura, movement. Poetic language and dark imagery weave a tale of female identity and give voice to the women in the textile mills, spinning thread and reinventing their personal histories in opposition to the strings that hold them in place. This award-winning play will be directed by Colleen Lanki, Artistic Director of TomoeArts, based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
