Our four-strong entity partnership that encompasses the Departments of Art & Art History, Music, and Theatre & Dance, as well as Outreach College, kicks off the Year of the Dragon with a roar of approval.

Life in Colors in Hawaiʻi 2012

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and the Academy Art Center at Linekona present “Life in Colors in Hawaiʻi” by the internationally renowned textile artist, Akihiko Izukura, from Kyoto, Japan. “Life in Colors” is exhibited at two locations—both with indoor and outdoor displays; the show features impressive large-scale textile installations, splashes of color on the landscape, as well as innovative examples of his natural dyeing and weaving. The philosophy behind Izukura’s art pieces is based on sustainability and the desire to improve the surrounding environment and hand it down to the next generation in a better state than it is now. In conjunction with the show, Izukura offers personalized Senshokudō [dyeing and weaving] workshops at the Academy Art Center at Linekona and a public lecture at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
Hawaiʻi is an ideal location for “Life in Colors.” The natural beauty of the islands, with its underlying radiance and power, provides inspiration to Izukura, a natural textile artist, who seeks to find a path for people to coexist with nature.
Ben Vereen in Concert
Leeward Community College Theatre
Saturday January 28, 8:00 pm
UH Mānoa’s Outreach College and Leeward Community College welcome the legendary Ben Vereen for an evening of song. A consumate artist whose accomplishments over a 40-year career have included Broadway (Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin), television (Roots, Webster, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) and film (Sweet Charity, All That Jazz, Idlewild). Onstage, Vereen exhibits an inexhaustible joy for performance.
The performance is a special fundraiser to benefit the Performing Arts programs of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Outreach College and Leeward Community College.

A traditional Indonesian Randai drama adapted by Musra Dahrizal and directed by Kirstin Pauka, with guest teachers from Indonesia
A daughter seeks revenge for the murder of her father in this exciting folk dance-drama. Randai comes from the Minangkabau ethnic group in Sumatra, Indonesia, and features beautiful traditional music and singing, martial arts, dance and acting; and its signature pants-slapping percussion!

ETHEL Quartet

America’s premier postclassical string quartet, ETHEL, invigorates contemporary concert music with refreshing exuberance, fierce intensity, imaginative programming and exceptional artistry. ETHEL is comprised of Cornelius Dufallo on violin, Dorothy Lawson on cello, Jennifer Choi on violin and Ralph Farris on viola.
ETHEL performs fabulous compositions from the past four decades. They boldly explore new synergies between tradition and technology. They have toured the world with concerts in Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, the Sydney Opera House, and Holland’s TROMP Festival to name a few.
For their Honolulu concert they will feature their program “Present Beauty” with compositions by Terry Riley, Huang Ruo, David Lang, Julia Wolfe, Philip Glass and selections from their residency work at Punahou School.

Soyeon Lee

First prize winner of the prestigious 2010 Naumburg International Piano Competition, Korean pianist Soyeon Lee has already been hailed by The New York Times as a pianist with “a huge, richly varied sound, a lively imagination and a firm sense of style,” while The Washington Post has lauded her for her “stunning command of the keyboard.”
Recent recital appearances include New York City programs at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Concert Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Art’s Alice Tully Hall, Washington’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Cleveland’s Severance Hall, the Ravinia Festival’s “Rising Stars” series, Auditorio de Musica de Nacional in Madrid - part of a 13-city tour of Spain.
Soyeon Lee was featured on the January 2006 cover of SYMPHONY magazine’s annual “Emerging Artists” issue and in the 2008 edition of Musical America’s “More Thrills of Discovery.” Her debut CD on the Naxos label, featuring sonatas of Scarlatti, was released in February 2007 to critical acclaim. KOCH International Classics released her second album in April 2009 for which she was awarded the 2009 Young Artist Award from the Classical Recording Foundation.
