The Reformer’s Brush: Modernity and Traditional Media in China

This exhibition, set to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1911 revolution in China, showcases approximately 60 to 80 works of Chinese calligraphy and painting from Honolulu collections. The selected works illustrate the ways in which those who participated in the various movements to modernize China through the 19th and early 20th centuries made use of these traditional art forms to reflect their ambitions for reform. The artists, who include painters as well as political, military, social, and educational leaders, took part in the reform movements that resulted in the 1911 revolution and the founding and shaping of the new Republic.

Kabuki: The Vengeful Sword (Ise Ondo Koi no Netaba)
Kennedy Theatre, Main Stage

The Vengeful Sword is a traditional kabuki that tells of a samurai in search of an important missing heirloom sword and what happens when he discovers its bloodthirsty nature: once unsheathed, it must kill! Fully staged, beautifully costumed, with live authentic music, stylized fighting, and everything from love to comedy to high drama, this kabuki will be the first presented in seven years and continues the 87-year tradition of HAWAIʻI KABUKI.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition

The 2011 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition is the culmination a multi-year curriculum of academic study within the Department of Art and Art History, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. This annual exhibition presents the very finest art and design work created during the final stages of the BFA candidates’ coursework. The exhibition features recent undergraduate works in ceramics, drawing/painting, electronic art, fiber, glass, graphic design, intermedia, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
